OpenAI working on new code hosting platform to rival GitHub

Competition in the developer tools ecosystem may soon intensify as OpenAI is reportedly developing its own code hosting platform. The project is said to be in the early stages and could eventually compete with GitHub, the widely used repository hosting service owned by Microsoft.

According to a report citing a source familiar with the matter, the artificial intelligence company began exploring the idea after experiencing repeated service disruptions on GitHub. Engineers at OpenAI reportedly faced several workflow interruptions in recent months when outages on the platform affected internal development pipelines.

The new project is still under development and may not be ready in the coming months. However, discussions have reportedly taken place about offering the repository hosting platform to customers as a paid service once it becomes available.

GitHub has experienced multiple service disruptions recently. In Dec 2025 alone, the platform reported 5 separate incidents that caused critical services to go down for more than 6 hours in total, according to an official update shared by the company.

These incidents are believed to have contributed to the frustration among engineers who rely heavily on the platform for software development and collaboration.

Despite the concerns, creating an alternative to GitHub would be a significant challenge. GitHub remains one of the most widely used platforms for hosting and managing code repositories. It offers a range of built-in developer tools, collaboration features and AI-powered coding assistance that support both enterprises and independent developers.

The platform also integrates easily with a wide range of development tools and services. This makes it a preferred choice for developers when managing codebases, handling pull requests and collaborating on large software projects.

If OpenAI moves forward with its own repository hosting platform, it would enter a highly competitive space dominated by established developer ecosystems.

Industry observers say the key question will be how OpenAI plans to attract developers and enterprises to adopt a new platform while competing against GitHub’s extensive features and strong global developer community.
