OpenAI has announced one of its biggest acquisitions yet, confirming a $1.1 billion all-stock deal to acquire Statsig, the Seattle-based product testing startup founded by Vijaye Raji. Once the transaction closes, Raji will join OpenAI as CTO of Applications, reporting directly to Fidji Simo, the former Instacart CEO who now leads OpenAI’s Applications division. In his new role, Raji will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT, Codex and upcoming applications, while Statsig’s platform will continue to serve its existing customers independently.
“This acquisition will accelerate product development across the Applications organization,” OpenAI said in its announcement. For Raji, the position brings wide-ranging responsibility, not only for ChatGPT and Codex but also for product infrastructure and integrity across OpenAI’s portfolio.
The leadership reshuffle extends beyond this appointment. Kevin Weil, currently Chief Product Officer, will take on the role of Vice President of OpenAI for Science, describing the division’s mission as creating “the next great scientific instrument: an AI-powered platform that accelerates scientific discovery.”
At the same time, Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s Head of Engineering, will transition to Chief Technology Officer of B2B applications, working closely with Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap to expand enterprise partnerships.
With Simo leading Applications, Raji stepping into the CTO role, and both Weil and Narayanan moving into new leadership positions, OpenAI is signalling a strong push to broaden its focus from frontier AI models to consumer and enterprise-ready products. By integrating Statsig’s expertise in experimentation and product testing, the company aims to accelerate its next stage of growth.
