OpenAI urges US to boost energy supply to stay ahead of China in AI race

OpenAI has urged the United States government to significantly increase investment in new energy capacity to stay competitive with China in the global artificial intelligence race. In an 11 page document submitted to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the company said that America’s electricity supply is already under pressure and is not ready for the rapid expansion of AI technologies.

The company stressed that electricity must be seen as a strategic national asset. In a recent blog post, OpenAI said “Electricity is not simply a utility. It is a strategic asset that is critical to building the AI infrastructure that will secure our leadership on the most consequential technology since electricity itself” and added “Electrons are the new oil.”

OpenAI called on the United States to commit to building 100 gigawatts of new energy capacity every year to keep up with global competition. For comparison, 10 gigawatts can support the yearly power needs of around eight million American households. The company noted that China added 429 gigawatts of new power capacity last year while the United States added only 51 gigawatts in the same period. OpenAI warned that this widening difference is creating an electron gap that could affect America’s leadership in AI development.

The push for more energy capacity comes as OpenAI has signed major agreements for large data centres with several technology companies. These deals are part of its plan to expand computing power and reduce dependence on a single partner. The developments are linked to a major multi vendor project that aims to support the next generation of AI infrastructure.

OpenAI has made it clear that without strong action to secure more power, the United States risks losing its lead in one of the most important technological fields of the future.
