OpenAI has announced the release of a new version of its coding model, GPT-5 Codex, designed to bring more intelligence and flexibility to AI coding tasks. Unlike earlier models, GPT-5 Codex can dynamically adjust the amount of time it spends on a problem — ranging from just a few seconds to up to seven hours — resulting in stronger performance on agentic coding benchmarks.
The new model is already rolling out across Codex products, which are available via terminal, IDEs, GitHub, and ChatGPT, for all Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise users. OpenAI confirmed it also plans to extend access to API customers in the near future.
The launch comes at a time when the AI coding space is heating up, with competitors such as Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, and GitHub Copilot vying for market share. Cursor alone crossed $500 million in annual recurring revenue earlier this year, reflecting booming demand for advanced AI programming tools.
OpenAI says GPT-5 Codex outperforms its predecessor GPT-5 on SWE-bench Verified, a benchmark for evaluating coding agents, and also shows significant improvements in code refactoring tasks from large, established repositories.
In addition to coding, the new model has been trained to provide more effective code reviews. According to OpenAI, experienced engineers testing the system found that GPT-5 Codex submitted fewer incorrect comments while offering more “high-impact” insights during reviews.
Alexander Embiricos, OpenAI’s Codex product lead, explained that GPT-5 Codex’s dynamic “thinking ability” is a key differentiator. Unlike systems that rely on a router to allocate compute time at the start of a task, Codex adjusts its problem-solving process in real time. “It can decide five minutes in that it needs another hour,” Embiricos noted, adding that in some cases, the model has worked on problems for over seven hours.
The upgrade positions OpenAI Codex as a more powerful, adaptable competitor in the AI development ecosystem, underscoring the company’s push to integrate deeper reasoning into coding assistance.
