OpenAI to roll out ads for ChatGPT free and Go users in the U.S.

OpenAI is preparing to expand its monetisation strategy by introducing advertisements within ChatGPT for users on its free and Go plans in the United States.

According to a company statement shared with sources, ads will begin appearing in the coming weeks. This move is part of a broader effort to diversify revenue streams as the company navigates rising infrastructure costs and growing competition in the generative AI space.

To support this rollout, OpenAI has integrated Criteo, an advertising technology firm that enables ad buying and improves targeting capabilities. The integration is part of an ongoing advertising pilot focused specifically on ChatGPT’s free and Go user base in the U.S.

Criteo, in a recent statement, confirmed its involvement and said it has been actively engaging advertisers for the initiative. As per a report by a media platform, advertisers are being encouraged to commit budgets ranging between $50,000 and $100,000 to participate in the pilot.

OpenAI has also advised advertisers to provide multiple variations of ad creatives, including text and visuals. This approach is expected to improve ad delivery frequency and overall campaign performance.

The development highlights a strategic shift for OpenAI as it looks to balance rapid growth with sustainable revenue generation. With increasing demand for AI services driving up compute costs, the introduction of ads signals a new phase in how AI platforms may monetise large-scale user bases.
