OpenAI is reportedly building a new artificial intelligence tool that can generate music using both text and audio prompts, according to a recent report. The upcoming technology is expected to allow users to add music to existing videos or create instrumental accompaniments such as guitar tracks for vocals.
Sources familiar with the project revealed that the timeline for the tool’s launch has not been confirmed. It also remains uncertain whether OpenAI will release it as an independent product or integrate it within its existing platforms such as ChatGPT or its video generation app Sora.
One source mentioned that OpenAI is collaborating with students from the Juilliard School to annotate musical scores. This process will provide high-quality training data to help the model understand complex musical structures and improve the accuracy of its generated compositions.
Although OpenAI has experimented with generative music models in the past, those projects were developed before the launch of ChatGPT. In recent years, the company has shifted its focus toward audio models that specialise in text-to-speech and speech-to-text technologies, expanding its capabilities across multiple creative and communication tools.
The growing field of AI-generated music has seen rapid advancements from other major players as well. Companies such as Google and Suno have already developed sophisticated music generation models, indicating that the competition in this space is intensifying. OpenAI’s latest initiative highlights its ambition to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence in creative applications and redefine how music can be produced through technology.
