OpenAI is facing technical difficulties after the viral trend of transforming images into Studio Ghibli-style artwork overwhelmed their resources. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, took to social media to explain the situation, revealing that the company’s GPUs are struggling under the immense demand. To manage this, OpenAI is implementing temporary rate limits on its image generation feature, which will soon be limited to three generations per day for free-tier users.
In a post on X, Altman stated, “It’s super fun seeing people love images in ChatGPT. But our GPUs are melting. We are going to temporarily introduce some rate limits while we work on making it more efficient. Hopefully, it won’t be long! ChatGPT’s free tier will get 3 generations per day soon.” Altman also acknowledged that some image generations that should be allowed are currently being blocked, but assured users that they are working quickly to fix these issues.
The Ghibli image trend involves users converting their images into the distinctive animation style of Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese animation studio. Since OpenAI’s native image generation feature launched, social media has been flooded with these Ghibli-style artworks, with many users, including Altman himself, transforming their profile pictures into these charming anime renditions.
Studio Ghibli, founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, has become synonymous with high-quality, hand-drawn animation and storytelling. Famous films such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl’s Moving Castle have solidified the studio’s position as a leader in the world of animation, known for their dreamlike visuals and deeply human narratives.
The native image generation tool, rolled out to Plus, Pro, Team, and Free users of ChatGPT, allows users to create and edit images. However, OpenAI recently delayed the full rollout for free-tier users due to the overwhelming popularity of this feature. Additionally, Altman revealed that the company is working on a new version of GPT-4o, which has improved capabilities in coding, instruction-following, and more freedom for users. “The new version of GPT-4o is particularly good at coding, instruction following, and freedom,” Altman noted.
With these updates and adjustments, OpenAI continues to refine its tools to meet the increasing demand and deliver the best possible experience to its users.
