ChatGPT creator OpenAI has reportedly posted a 16 percent rise in revenue during the first half of 2025. According to a report from a common source, the company generated about 4.3 billion dollars in revenue, driven by rising demand for generative AI tools across industries. OpenAI’s flagship offerings, including ChatGPT Enterprise and its API services, have played a key role in this growth.
However, the report also highlighted that OpenAI continues to face significant financial pressure. The company is said to have burned around 2.5 billion dollars in cash during the same period, largely due to expenses linked to AI development and the operation of its ChatGPT software.
The report further revealed that OpenAI spent approximately 6.7 billion dollars on research and development. Despite these costs, the company appears to be on track to achieve its annual revenue target of 13 billion dollars.
The strong performance comes at a time of intensifying competition in the artificial intelligence sector. Rivals such as Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Meta are also vying for market share, while adoption of AI tools by enterprises continues to grow rapidly.
Microsoft remains a crucial partner, having invested billions in OpenAI and integrated its models into products such as Copilot for Microsoft 365.
Although OpenAI does not disclose official earnings as it is privately held, the report suggests that the company is set for another record year. In 2024, OpenAI was estimated to have generated more than 9 billion dollars in annualised revenue, supported by subscriptions and enterprise contracts.
