OpenAI has increased the prices of its ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscription plans in India, shifting from dollar-based billing to charges in Indian Rupees. While this makes it easier for Indian users to subscribe, the revised pricing means they will now pay more than before.
Earlier, ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans were priced at 20 dollars and 200 dollars, which came to around Rs 1,750 and Rs 17,500. With the new Indian pricing, the same plans now cost Rs 1,999 and Rs 19,900. This translates to nearly a 14 per cent rise in subscription costs for users who want access to advanced AI features. The higher pricing also applies to OpenAI’s Team and Business plans, making them more expensive than earlier.
The price change is significant because affordability has been one of the key concerns for Indian users. During his visit to India last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was told by several startup founders and developers that the cost of ChatGPT paid plans limited wider adoption across the country.
Reports had suggested that OpenAI was working on a more affordable Go plan that could be launched alongside GPT 5. However, there has been no update on this lower-cost option so far.
Despite the higher subscription charges, ChatGPT remains very popular in India. Competing platforms are trying to capture the market by offering attractive deals. Perplexity AI, for instance, is providing one year of free Pro access to Airtel customers. Similarly, Google is bundling its Gemini premium plan with added benefits such as extra cloud storage and services like YouTube Premium.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT continues to dominate the global AI chatbot market. According to data from app intelligence firm Appfigures, the platform has generated more than 2 billion dollars in consumer spending worldwide since its launch in May 2023. This figure is over 30 times higher than the combined lifetime revenue of rival chatbots such as Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
In 2025 alone, ChatGPT’s mobile app recorded revenue of 1.35 billion dollars, reflecting a 673 per cent increase compared to the previous year. On a monthly basis, the app is now generating close to 193 million dollars.
While OpenAI’s revised pricing strategy may make subscriptions less affordable for many users in India, its strong performance globally highlights the platform’s continued dominance in the artificial intelligence market.
