OpenAI Supports Production of AI-Powered Animated Film ‘Critterz’

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is providing its tools and computing resources to create a feature-length animated film powered by artificial intelligence. According to a report by a common news source, the film is titled Critterz and is the idea of Chad Nelson, a creative specialist at OpenAI. The story follows a group of forest creatures who set out on an adventure after their village is disrupted by a stranger. The project is being produced in collaboration with London-based Vertigo Films and California-based Native Foreign, a studio that focuses on AI-enhanced content.

Planned Debut at Cannes
The budget for Critterz is reportedly under 30 million dollars, much lower than the usual cost of animated films. It is expected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Nelson explained the significance of the project by saying, “OpenAI can say what its tools do all day long, but it’s much more impactful if someone does it. That’s a much better case study than me building a demo.”

James Richardson, co-founder of Vertigo Films, stated that the goal is to complete the movie in about nine months, a sharp contrast to the typical three years required for animated productions.

Script, Production and Funding
The script for Critterz has been written by some of the writers behind Paddington in Peru. Production has already begun, with casting for voice roles expected to be finalised soon. The project is being funded by Federation Studios, the Paris-based parent company of Vertigo. Approximately 30 people are currently working on the film, and the studios have introduced a profit-sharing model to ensure contributors share in the earnings.

AI in Cinema
OpenAI aims to demonstrate that artificial intelligence can create content capable of reaching the big screen, potentially accelerating Hollywood’s adoption of the technology. An OpenAI spokesperson commented, “The film reflects the kind of creativity and exploration we love to encourage.”
