OpenAI leaders Sam Altman and Jakub Pachocki have shared plans for a major advancement in artificial intelligence. The US based company aims to launch Automated AI Research by 2028. This technology is expected to help AI models make scientific discoveries and create new technologies. The company believes this is an important step towards autonomous intelligence in the future.
Before this major release, OpenAI will introduce Automated AI Research Intern tools. These tools will support researchers by speeding up the research process. Altman has also confirmed that the company is working on new AI hardware that will arrive in the coming years.
During a recent livestream, Altman and Pachocki outlined the timeline for the new technology. A complete version of Automated AI Research Intern is planned for September 2026. The Automated AI Research tools are expected by March 2028. Pachocki said the Intern tools aim to “meaningfully accelerate” research.
Once available, Automated AI Research will be able to deliver full research reports on different subjects without human help. This would mark progress towards achieving advanced capabilities like superintelligence and artificial general intelligence. It could allow AI systems to discover and invent using deep learning.
Pachocki also explained that OpenAI plans to increase test time compute. This refers to the amount of time AI models spend thinking, researching, and responding. Current AI models can perform tasks that take five seconds, five minutes, or even five hours. He believes this will continue to grow, enabling tasks that require months or years of work.
Altman also confirmed that OpenAI is creating new devices that will launch soon. These products will allow users to access ChatGPT anywhere.
Meanwhile, Google provides a Deep Research feature that creates research plans after users give a topic. However, it cannot independently conduct research or make discoveries. It requires a human prompt to start the process.
In other updates, PayPal has adopted the Agentic Commerce Protocol to support payments on ChatGPT. Users will be able to make card payments through PayPal on ChatGPT Instant Checkout. The service is currently available for users in the United States, with selected merchants already onboard. In India, OpenAI has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India and RazorPay for future launch of this feature.
