OpenAI is reportedly building new productivity tools within ChatGPT that could soon let users create spreadsheets and presentations without opening Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint. According to a recent report, these upcoming features are designed to function inside ChatGPT and use open-source formats that remain compatible with Microsoft Office.
This move could make everyday tasks like building charts, organizing data, or creating slide decks much simpler. Instead of switching between multiple apps, users would interact directly with ChatGPT through user-friendly buttons to generate or edit content step by step. The aim is to offer a smarter, streamlined experience for users looking to avoid costly Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace subscriptions.
The tools are still under development, but they reflect a bigger vision for ChatGPT. OpenAI is also working on advanced AI “agents” that could take on complex tasks such as generating reports using public or internal data, scheduling meetings, or completing basic online actions. If successful, this could transform ChatGPT from just a chatbot into a full-scale productivity assistant.
One key point is that these new tools would not require Microsoft’s permission. By using open formats, OpenAI can introduce these features independently, which may add to the growing competition between the two companies. Although OpenAI and Microsoft maintain a business partnership, recent reports have suggested some friction, even though OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has denied any tension.
At the moment, early versions of these tools may not include cloud storage, real-time collaboration, or the speed of established platforms. However, if those gaps are closed, the new ChatGPT tools could become a strong alternative, especially for individuals or small teams who need simple, AI-powered document creation.
With no official release date yet, the development still signals a major step toward making ChatGPT a central hub for productivity tasks, not just a tool for conversation.
