OpenAI is building a standalone social media app for its upcoming Sora 2 video generation model. According to documents reviewed by a common source, the app will feature a TikTok-style interface where all content is created using AI.
The platform will have a vertical video feed with swipe-to-scroll navigation, a personalised For You page driven by recommendation algorithms, and social tools such as liking, commenting, and remixing videos. Unlike traditional platforms, users will not be able to upload photos or videos from their devices. All clips must be generated through Sora 2, with videos capped at a maximum of 10 seconds.
A notable feature is identity verification through facial recognition. This will allow users to confirm their likeness so that they or others can include them in AI-generated videos. Users will receive alerts whenever their likeness is used, even if the content is still saved as a draft. For instance, a person could create a video showing themselves and a friend enjoying a roller coaster ride.
The app was launched internally last week and has received “overwhelmingly positive feedback” from OpenAI employees. Some managers reportedly joked it might become a productivity distraction due to heavy usage.
Industry sources suggest OpenAI views this as an opportunity to enter the short-form video space, especially as TikTok faces ownership uncertainty in the United States after deadlines set for ByteDance to sell its US operations.
The app will include copyright protections and content filters that may block the creation of certain videos. This comes as OpenAI faces several copyright lawsuits, including a widely discussed case from a major publication.
The move adds to growing competition in the AI video sector. Meta recently introduced “Vibes,” an AI-only video feed within its Meta AI app, while Google has integrated its Veo 3 video model into YouTube.
