Recent social media posts showing what appeared to be ads inside ChatGPT sparked speculation about potential changes to the app. Users shared screenshots claiming ad placements, raising questions about how such moves could affect the ChatGPT experience.
Addressing the rumours, Nick Turley, VP and head of the ChatGPT app, clarified on a social platform that OpenAI is not running any ad experiments. He said the circulating images are either fabricated or misinterpreted, emphasising that “there are no live tests for ads.” Turley also noted that if OpenAI decides to explore advertising in the future, it would be done carefully, keeping user trust as a top priority.
Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly treating competitive pressure from Google’s Gemini as a “code red.” In an internal memo, Altman warned employees that the company needs to refocus on strengthening ChatGPT in response to the Gemini 3 release, which poses a significant challenge to OpenAI and other AI companies such as Anthropic and Meta.
To address the urgency, OpenAI will temporarily scale back or slow work on several other projects. Initiatives related to advertising and autonomous technologies are being paused while the company concentrates on a “surge” to improve ChatGPT and maintain its lead in the AI space.
