OpenAI partners with Walmart to enable direct shopping through ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced a partnership with Walmart that will allow shoppers to make purchases directly within ChatGPT. The move marks a significant step in OpenAI’s plan to turn its chatbot into a virtual shopping assistant while creating new revenue opportunities for the company.

In a statement on Tuesday, Walmart said the new feature will let customers “simply chat and buy,” enabling them to purchase products through instant checkout in ChatGPT. Shoppers will be able to order items ranging from meal ingredients to household goods and other products they discuss with the chatbot.

“For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses,” said Doug McMillon, CEO of Walmart. “That is about to change.”

Sam Altman, cofounder and CEO of OpenAI, said the collaboration aims to “make everyday purchases a little simpler.”

The companies have not yet confirmed the official launch date but stated the feature will be available “soon.”

This partnership represents OpenAI’s latest step into online commerce. The company has recently introduced similar integrations for Shopify and Etsy sellers. However, joining forces with Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, marks its biggest expansion into retail yet. By competing with major players such as Amazon and Google for digital shopping transactions, OpenAI is exploring new ways to generate revenue, as it continues to rely on investors to fund its large-scale AI operations.

OpenAI previously worked with payments provider Stripe to build the technical framework for its “Instant Checkout” system, which powers in-chat transactions.

Meanwhile, Walmart has been integrating AI across its business operations and consumer platforms. The company highlighted its AI-powered shopping assistant, Sparky, and other AI-driven innovations across Walmart and Sam’s Club. Members of Sam’s Club will also be able to use the new ChatGPT shopping feature once it goes live.

“AI is transforming everything we do, from smarter catalogues to faster delivery, and it only works if people trust it,” said Daniel Danker, Executive Vice President of AI Acceleration, Product and Design at Walmart.
