OpenAI partners with Tata Group for 100MW AI data centre, plans 1GW scale-up

In a major push to expand its AI infrastructure in India, OpenAI has secured 100 megawatts of AI-ready data centre capacity through a partnership with the Tata Group, with plans to scale the deployment to 1 gigawatt over time. The collaboration is part of OpenAI’s Stargate project aimed at building global AI infrastructure and accelerating enterprise adoption in key growth markets.

Under the agreement, OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data centre business, starting with 100 megawatts of capacity. The deal also includes rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise across Tata’s workforce and standardising AI-native software development using OpenAI’s tools. The initiative falls under the “OpenAI for India” programme and reflects India’s importance as a market with over 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, spanning students, teachers, developers and entrepreneurs.

The local data centre capacity will allow OpenAI to run its advanced models within India, helping reduce latency and meet data residency, security and compliance needs for regulated sectors and government workloads. Hosting compute domestically is critical for enterprises handling sensitive data. An initial 100 megawatts represents a significant commitment, given the high power demands of GPU clusters used for AI training and inference. Scaling to 1 gigawatt would place the Tata facility among the largest AI-focused data centre deployments globally.

Beyond infrastructure, Tata plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across hundreds of thousands of employees at TCS over the coming years, potentially marking one of the largest enterprise AI rollouts globally. TCS will also use OpenAI’s Codex tools to standardise AI-led software development. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the partnership would help build “state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India” and skill the workforce for the AI era. HyperVault is backed by ₹180 billion in planned investment, with support from TPG secured in November 2025. OpenAI will also expand certification programmes in India and open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, adding to its New Delhi presence, as it deepens partnerships with companies including Pine Labs, JioHotstar, Eternal, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED and MakeMyTrip.
