OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank have announced plans to develop five new artificial intelligence data centres in the United States as part of the $500 billion Stargate project. This initiative aims to dramatically scale AI infrastructure across the country.
OpenAI revealed that three of these sites will be developed in partnership with Oracle. The locations include Shackelford County in Texas, Dona Ana County in New Mexico, and an undisclosed site in the Midwest. Additionally, two more centres will be built in Lordstown, Ohio and Milam County, Texas by OpenAI, Japan’s SoftBank and a SoftBank affiliate.
The Stargate project was launched earlier this year during a meeting hosted by United States President Donald Trump with top technology company leaders. The initiative focuses on developing the computing infrastructure needed to support the rapid advancement of AI technologies.
OpenAI stated that the new facilities, including the expanded Oracle-OpenAI site in Abilene, Texas and other projects with CoreWeave, will collectively raise Stargate’s total data centre capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts. This represents more than $400 billion in planned investment over the next three years. The full vision of the project is to reach a capacity of 10 gigawatts.
“AI can only fulfil its promise if we build the compute to power it,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The initiative is also expected to create around 25,000 onsite jobs.
This announcement follows Nvidia’s statement on Monday that it will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and supply the required data centre chips. According to sources, OpenAI and its partners plan to use debt financing to lease the chips needed for the Stargate expansion.
OpenAI, along with its major backer Microsoft, is one of several technology companies investing heavily in AI data centre infrastructure to support generative AI tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot.
With increasing interest in AI’s potential and strategic importance in areas like defence, the technology remains a major focus for Trump and US tech giants, particularly as competition grows from global players like China.
