OpenAI and Oracle to Build 4.5 GW Data Center Capacity for AI Infrastructure

OpenAI and Oracle are embarking on an ambitious joint venture, “Stargate,” to develop an additional 4.5 gigawatts of data center capacity. This massive expansion is aimed at solidifying the United States’ leadership in artificial intelligence amidst intensifying global competition.

The new data center capacity, which includes a significant site in Abilene, Texas, will bring the total data center infrastructure under construction to more than 5 gigawatts. This colossal undertaking is designed to support the operational needs of over 2 million chips, crucial for powering advanced AI models and applications.

The partnership between OpenAI, a pioneer in generative AI, and Oracle, a leader in cloud infrastructure, underscores the immense demand for computing power to fuel the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. Building such extensive data center capabilities is essential for training larger models, running complex AI workloads, and delivering AI-powered services at scale.

“This collaboration with Oracle is a critical step in our mission to ensure that the United States remains at the forefront of AI innovation,” stated a representative from OpenAI. “The Stargate venture will provide the foundational infrastructure necessary to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve.”

“Stargate is a strategic leap forward in building AI-native infrastructure,” said Clay Magouyrk, Executive VP, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. “Our collaboration with OpenAI ensures that cutting-edge AI systems are supported by energy-efficient and scalable compute environments.”

The development of this vast data center capacity is a testament to the ongoing global race for AI dominance, with nations and corporations investing heavily in the underlying infrastructure that powers the AI revolution.
