OpenAI is reportedly moving faster than expected with its hardware plans. According to a report, the San Francisco based artificial intelligence company is preparing to reveal its first AI powered device later this year. While the company has not shared official details about the product, it is believed to be an audio focused wearable. However, the device is not expected to be ready for shipping this year. The current timeline suggests an early 2027 release.
The report quoted OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane, who said the company was “on track” to introduce its first hardware later this year. He did not confirm an exact date for the unveiling.
Several rumours have surfaced about OpenAI ongoing hardware efforts. The company is said to be working with renowned designer Jony Ive on three different products. One of these is believed to be a wearable, although OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has denied this claim in the past. Another device is expected to be a tabletop product that works entirely through voice commands. The third is said to be an AI pen. At present, there is no clear information on how these devices will function or what features they will offer.
In December 2025, a report suggested that these products had entered the vendor selection stage. Once the manufacturing partner and production location are finalised, mass production would begin. The report claimed that Foxconn was chosen over Luxshare, with Vietnam selected as the production base.
In a separate development, another technology publication reported that OpenAI and Ive design team hired Janum Trivedi, an interface designer who previously worked at Apple between 2019 and 2021. He is known for developing features such as Split View, Multitasking Drag and Drop, iPad Pointer Gestures, and other interface tools for iPadOS 15. He has also worked at Netflix, The Browser Company, and most recently at Airbnb.
