OpenAI is reportedly exploring the addition of direct messaging to ChatGPT, potentially transforming the AI tool into a social-collaborative platform. The feature, codenamed “Calpico,” was spotted during beta testing on Android devices.
The move signals OpenAI’s plan to expand ChatGPT beyond a conversational AI assistant into an interactive workspace. The new DM system would allow users to communicate, collaborate, brainstorm ideas, share prompts, co-create images, plan projects, or simply chat within a shared AI environment. Individual ChatGPT memories would remain private, ensuring that participants cannot access each other’s chat history or saved data.
Developer and engineer Tibor Blaho, who noticed the feature in the Android beta, said it resembles the direct messaging system available on OpenAI’s Sora app for iPhone, which supports collaboration on video projects. Early indications suggest an invite-link feature could allow users to create group chats or shared collaboration rooms. It is still unclear whether end-to-end encryption, like on WhatsApp or Signal, will be included — a key factor for privacy and trust.
The potential DM rollout aligns with OpenAI’s recent expansions. The company introduced the “Apps SDK” to let developers build AI-powered apps within ChatGPT and launched autonomous ChatGPT Agents capable of browsing the web, filling forms, and completing complex tasks. OpenAI also unveiled Sora 2, an upgraded video generation model, and a TikTok-style app for sharing AI-generated clips.
These updates reflect OpenAI’s long-term goal to position ChatGPT as a versatile ecosystem that combines communication, creativity, and productivity.
Privacy remains a major concern. Earlier this year, OpenAI faced criticism when its “share” feature allowed some user chats to be indexed by Google Search. The company later removed the indexed chats and rolled back the feature. Handling privacy and data security effectively will be critical if ChatGPT DMs are introduced.
