OpenAI Launches ‘Study Mode’ in ChatGPT to Support Step-by-Step Learning for Students

OpenAI has introduced a new feature in ChatGPT called “study mode”, designed to help students work through academic questions with guided, step-by-step support instead of receiving direct answers.

Announced on July 29, this feature is now available to all logged-in users across ChatGPT Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. Access for ChatGPT Edu users will be rolled out in the coming weeks. The move is part of OpenAI’s broader mission to make ChatGPT more useful in educational environments.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman posted, “Introducing study mode in ChatGPT — step by step guidance for students rather than quick answers.”

OpenAI said that study mode gives students personalised feedback, helping them track their learning progress and improve knowledge retention. “When students engage with study mode, they’re met with guiding questions that calibrate responses to their objective and skill level to help them build deeper understanding. Study mode is designed to be engaging and interactive, and to help students learn something — not just finish something,” the company said in a statement.

With millions of students already relying on ChatGPT for homework help, exam preparation, and understanding new topics, this update aims to make learning more effective. OpenAI added, “But its use in education has also raised an important question: how do we ensure it is used to support real learning, and doesn’t just offer solutions without helping students make sense of them? We’ve built study mode to help answer this question.”

How to Use ChatGPT’s Study Mode:

Log in to ChatGPT at chat.openai.com with your OpenAI account.

Ensure you are on a Free, Plus, Pro, or Team plan.

Choose the GPT-4 model (or GPT-4 Turbo for Plus/Pro users) for the best experience.

In the tools menu, select the “Study and learn” option.

Ask a learning-related question such as a math problem or exam concept.

Follow the interactive prompts, hints, and questions without being given the final answer.

Receive personalised feedback based on your previous interactions.
