OpenAI launches ChatGPT Pulse to deliver proactive morning briefs

OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT feature called Pulse, designed to generate personalized reports while users sleep. Pulse delivers five to ten briefs each morning, helping users get up to speed on their day, similar to checking a news app or social media feed.

The feature is part of OpenAI’s shift toward asynchronous AI tools that act more like proactive assistants than reactive chatbots. Pulse can provide news roundups on specific topics, personalized briefs, or contextual updates based on user data.

“We’re building AI that lets us take the level of support that only the wealthiest have been able to afford and make it available to everyone over time,” said OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo. “ChatGPT Pulse is the first step in that direction — starting with Pro users today, with the goal of rolling it out to all users.”

Pulse will initially be available to subscribers of OpenAI’s $200-a-month Pro plan, appearing as a new tab in the ChatGPT app starting Thursday. OpenAI plans to expand access to Plus subscribers once the product becomes more efficient.

Each Pulse report appears as a card containing AI-generated text and images, which users can click to view full content and ask ChatGPT follow-up questions. In demos, Pulse created updates on a British soccer team, group Halloween costume suggestions, and a toddler-friendly travel itinerary.

The feature integrates with ChatGPT Connectors, allowing users to connect apps such as Google Calendar and Gmail. Pulse can then parse emails overnight to highlight important messages or generate an agenda from calendar events. If memory features are enabled, Pulse uses context from prior chats to make reports more personalized.

OpenAI emphasizes user-friendly design: Pulse stops after generating a few reports with a message, “Great, that’s it for today,” avoiding the engagement-driven loops typical of social media.

While Pulse could compete with news apps, newsletters, and journalism platforms, it cites sources with links similar to ChatGPT Search. In the future, OpenAI envisions Pulse performing agentic tasks like making restaurant reservations or drafting emails for approval, though these capabilities may take time to gain user trust.
