OpenAI introduces age prediction feature on ChatGPT

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it is rolling out an age prediction feature on ChatGPT worldwide. The new system is designed to estimate whether an account is likely being used by a minor, as the company prepares to introduce adult content on its popular chatbot.

According to OpenAI, when the age prediction model suggests that an account may belong to someone under 18, ChatGPT will automatically apply extra safety measures. These protections are meant to limit exposure to sensitive material.

“When the age prediction model estimates that an account may belong to someone under 18, ChatGPT automatically applies additional protections designed to reduce exposure to sensitive content,” the company said in a statement.

Users who are incorrectly classified as under 18 will be able to restore full access by submitting a selfie through Persona, an identity verification service.

In the European Union, the feature is expected to be introduced in the coming weeks.

In December, OpenAI’s head of applications, Fidji Simo, said she expects an “adult mode” to launch on ChatGPT in the first quarter of 2026. This follows earlier comments by chief executive Sam Altman about allowing mature content for users who verify their age.

ChatGPT currently has 800 million weekly active users. OpenAI also revealed last week that it will begin showing advertisements to some users in the United States as part of its efforts to increase revenue.

The company, backed by a major technology firm, reported that its annual revenue crossed 20 billion dollars in 2025, up from 6 billion dollars in 2024. Finance chief Sarah Friar said the growth closely follows the company’s expanding computing capacity.
