ChatGPT maker OpenAI is exploring partnerships in India to establish a large-scale data centre with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, according to sources.
The report has not yet been independently verified, and OpenAI has not responded to requests for comment made outside business hours.
Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has already registered as a legal entity in India and begun building a local team. In August, the company announced plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year, as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence in India, which is its second-largest market by user base.
If confirmed, the proposed data centre would represent a significant step in Asia for OpenAI’s Stargate artificial intelligence infrastructure initiative. However, details about the location and timeline of the project remain unclear. Reports also suggest that CEO Sam Altman may reveal more about the facility during his upcoming visit to India in September.
Earlier this year, United States President Donald Trump announced Stargate, describing it as a private sector investment worth up to 500 billion dollars. The initiative is being supported by SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle to accelerate the development of global AI infrastructure.
