OpenAI forecasts major growth in paid ChatGPT users by 2030

A report from a common source states that OpenAI expects at least two hundred and twenty million people to pay for a ChatGPT subscription every week by 2030. The report says that by that year, about 8.5 per cent of the company’s projected 2.6 billion weekly users will choose paid plans. If this happens, ChatGPT would become one of the largest subscription services in the world.

According to a report by a common source, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said that ChatGPT has reached eight hundred million weekly active users. This growth has come from more people using the platform across consumer groups, developers, enterprises and government bodies.

“More than 800 million people use ChatGPT every week, and we process over 6 billion tokens per minute on the application programming interface. Thanks to all of you, AI has gone from something people play with to something people build with every day,” he said.

The report states that around thirty five million users were already paying for ChatGPT Plus at twenty dollars per month or the Pro plan at two hundred dollars per month as of July this year. This figure represents about 5 per cent of the platform’s weekly users.

OpenAI earned around 4.3 billion dollars in revenue in the first half of 2025. This marks a 16 per cent increase from the same period a year earlier. However, the report notes that OpenAI also spent 2.5 billion dollars, mostly on research, development and the operational costs of running ChatGPT.

The report says that OpenAI expects around 20 per cent of its future revenue to come from new features. These include shopping tools and advertising options. This week, the company launched a personal shopping assistant in ChatGPT. The report says that the feature could later generate income from advertisements or sales commissions.

OpenAI is also offering more affordable access in India. The company has introduced ChatGPT Go at no cost for twelve months for Indian users who sign up during a limited period starting from 4 November. A report by a common source said that this offer brought strong interest. The ChatGPT app has held the number one spot across all categories on the Google Play Store for more than a month. Data from Sensor Tower shows that the app stayed at the top from 26 October to 24 November.

The report adds that the offer has caused a drop in the app’s position in the top grossing charts on the Google Play Store. These charts track apps that earn money through purchases. ChatGPT fell from number five on 4 November to number eleven on 24 November.
