OpenAI Group PBC has revealed plans to acquire Neptune Labs Inc., a Poland based startup known for its platform that helps researchers pinpoint weaknesses in artificial intelligence models. While the companies did not share the financial terms, a common news outlet reported that the deal is expected to be funded through OpenAI stock.
Neptune focuses on collecting detailed telemetry from AI model layers without reducing or condensing the data. AI models contain millions of neurons arranged in layers, each performing part of the processing. Researchers often face challenges gathering accurate layer level data due to its size and complexity. Neptune’s approach offers complete visibility without sacrificing data quality, making it easier to spot inefficiencies and output issues that occur during training.
The platform can track gradients, which help neural networks learn from mistakes by adjusting their neurons. It also gathers information about activation functions that decide which neurons should participate in a calculation, reducing the involvement of unnecessary neurons that can affect output accuracy. After collecting this information, Neptune displays it through built in visualizations, removing the need for external analytics tools and helping teams compare model configurations more easily.
According to Neptune, more than 60000 AI researchers use its software, including teams at OpenAI. The company stated that integrating Neptune’s technology will strengthen its internal AI development tools. Neptune will shut down its platform on March 4 and will offer guides and scripts for customers moving to alternative platforms. This acquisition follows OpenAI’s recent purchase of Software Applications Inc., the creator of Sky, an automation tool designed to interact with a Mac. The technology will be incorporated into ChatGPT.
