OpenAI is getting ready to release its next-generation GPT-5 language model in August. By the end of this month, an open-source model is anticipated to be available even sooner. The announcements coincide with a rush by AI companies to provide more potent and easily accessible tools for developers and users worldwide.
In a recent podcast interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that the organization will be “releasing GPT-5 soon.” Altman suggested that GPT-5’s reasoning skills are superior to those of the current iterations, although he did not provide many details. “It was a surprising experience,” he said, describing a “here it is” moment when GPT-5 answered a difficult question that he himself was unable to answer. The excitement surrounding the model has only increased as a result of his comments.
Early August appears to be the official launch date for GPT-5, according to those familiar with OpenAI’s intentions. The new model will be a component of OpenAI’s plan to integrate its o-series and GPT technologies into a single system, which will facilitate user and developer interaction. It is anticipated that this integration will make selecting models easier, particularly for tasks requiring reasoning.
A main version, a smaller “mini” version, and an even lighter “nano” version of GPT-5 are reportedly part of the launch, however OpenAI has not yet disclosed formal specifics. Only the main and tiny versions are anticipated to be immediately available within ChatGPT, while all three will be reachable via OpenAI’s API. However, it’s likely that the nano version will only be accessible through APIs.
It is anticipated that reasoning features from OpenAI’s o3 model, which was previously tested independently, will also be incorporated into the upcoming GPT-5 model. By taking this step, OpenAI will be able to showcase GPT-5 as a more comprehensive and powerful system, advancing its overarching objective of creating Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a system that can carry out tasks on par with or better than humans.
Even though the introduction of GPT-5 is receiving more attention, OpenAI intends to release an open-weight AI model prior to the August rollout. By the end of July, this model should be available for purchase. Insiders claim that the open model will resemble the o3 mini in that it will have strong reasoning capabilities and provide the AI community with unrestricted access to potent tools. It’s a significant move because, since the introduction of GPT-2 in 2019, OpenAI has not produced a fully open-weight model.
According to reports, a number of platforms, including Hugging Face, Microsoft’s Azure, and other significant cloud services, will make the open model accessible. Companies like Meta and Mistral, who have already released a number of open models this year, may find it easier to compete with OpenAI thanks to this release.
