OpenAI brings ChatGPT advanced Voice Mode directly into the chat interface

OpenAI has introduced a new update that integrates ChatGPT’s advanced Voice Mode directly within the chat interface. Earlier, this feature opened in a separate full screen window. With the new improvement, users can now hold a real time voice conversation with the AI while still viewing the chat messages.

The company announced the redesign in a post on a social media platform. Voice Mode is a feature that allows users to speak with the chatbot and receive human like responses that match pitch and tone. It was launched in July 2024 for paid users and later expanded to free users in August 2025.

This update brings the voice experience into the main chat screen. Users can now see text messages during a conversation and also view visual outputs such as maps or shopping suggestions provided through the Shopping Research tool. It also enables smoother multitasking. Users can ask the AI to create an image, check it instantly, and request changes without ending the voice session. They can also try voice based coding within the same interface.

For those who prefer the older layout, OpenAI has added an option to switch back. Users can go to the options menu in the app, tap their name, open the Voice settings, and turn on the Separate mode toggle to return to the previous full screen setup.
