OpenAI begins pilot ads in ChatGPT with major brands on board

As OpenAI starts testing advertisements inside ChatGPT, several well-known brands have confirmed their participation in the pilot programme. The initiative marks a new phase for the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company as it experiments with monetisation through in-chat promotions.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT on Monday. Soon after, multiple companies announced partnerships for the pilot run. These include Adobe, Audible, Ford, Target, Dentsu, and others. In separate posts, the brands said they plan to use this format to connect with customers in spaces they already engage with. At present, OpenAI is showing targeted ads only to users on the free tier and subscribers of ChatGPT Go in the US.

Ads in ChatGPT are displayed at the bottom of a response and are clearly separated from the main answer. These promotions are keyword-based and linked to the user’s conversation with the chatbot. The targeting also considers chat history and past interactions. Currently, ads are visible only to logged-in adult users in the US.

According to a media report, Adobe is among the first advertisers and will promote products such as Acrobat Studio and Adobe Firefly. The company said it is working closely with OpenAI to understand how ads can be thoughtfully integrated into the conversational experience.

Audible also confirmed its participation through a LinkedIn post. While it did not specify whether the ads would promote subscriptions or audiobooks, the company stated, “The pilot will enable us to understand how advertising can create value in conversational AI environments while maintaining the trust users place in these platforms.”

Target will display keyword-based ads as well. Explaining the format, the retailer said that if a user asks, “What are some countertop cooking appliances that make everyday meals more convenient?” they may see an ad for an air fryer.

Williams-Sonoma is also part of the pilot. The brand said it will explore how ads in ChatGPT can help “surface relevant, high-quality products while preserving the trusted and transparent user experience both companies value.”

HelloFresh said it aims to reach users during “high-intent moments” when they are actively seeking solutions. Other participants include Ford, Mazda, Mrs. Myers, Dentsu, and more.

Separately, another report stated that OpenAI is charging advertisers $60, or around Rs. 5,400, per 1,000 views, which is about 3 times higher than what Meta charges on its platforms.
