OpenAI Begins Hiring As It Prepares To Launch First India Office In New Delhi

OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is expanding its presence in India with plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year. Ahead of the launch, the company has officially started hiring for key roles.

The exact location of the new office has not yet been disclosed, but the decision highlights the growing importance of India in the global artificial intelligence landscape. With one of the largest user bases for ChatGPT, India has become a priority market for OpenAI.

Currently, OpenAI has listed three job openings in India, all in the sales category. The roles available are Account Director for Digital Natives, Account Director for Large Enterprise, and Account Director for Strategics. Interested candidates can apply directly through OpenAI’s official careers page, with the process being fully online.

The expansion comes at a time when ChatGPT usage in India has increased rapidly. The country has the largest student user base on the platform, and active weekly users have grown four times over the past year. To cater to this rising demand, OpenAI recently introduced its most affordable subscription plan priced at $4.60 (Rs. 399) per month, aiming to make the service more accessible to millions of internet users.

However, the company’s rapid growth has also brought challenges. OpenAI is facing legal scrutiny in India as some publishers allege their content was used to train AI models without permission. The company has denied these claims. At the same time, competition in the Indian market is intensifying, with rivals such as Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity offering premium features at no cost.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described the India office launch as the beginning of building “AI for India, and with India,” underlining the importance of a local team. Pragya Misra, currently the company’s only representative in India, confirmed that more hires and initiatives will follow in the coming weeks.

India, with its community of over 15 million developers, is expected to play a key role in OpenAI’s innovation plans. Features such as ChatGPT Go and Study Mode were first developed in India before being rolled out globally. According to Misra, the expansion also addresses feedback from Indian users about affordability and accessibility, which will remain central to OpenAI’s growth strategy.
