OpenAI announces free access to ChatGPT Go for all users in India

OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT Go will be available free of cost to all users in India starting from 4 November. This move aims to strengthen its presence in what the company says is its second largest and fastest growing market worldwide.

ChatGPT Go is the mid tier subscription option for the ChatGPT service. It was launched in India in August at a monthly cost of Rs 399. The decision to offer it free for a year follows similar strategies by other technology companies working to expand their user base in India. Competitors like a major search company and an AI platform recently removed charges for their premium AI features to attract more users in the country.

The complimentary ChatGPT Go plan will provide several advantages to Indian users. These include higher limits on messages, more daily access to image generation and uploads, and improved memory for personalised and context aware responses.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said: “Since launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from users has been inspiring. Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we are making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India access and benefit from advanced AI.”

OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman has also noted that India is a key market for the company. He reported that paid subscriptions in India more than doubled after the introduction of the ChatGPT Go plan, reflecting strong demand for enhanced AI tools. The Go subscription has now expanded to almost 90 countries.

This launch marks the latest step in the growing competition within the Indian AI market, as leading companies race to deliver advanced technology to millions of users.
