Paypal has teamed up with OpenAI to bring agentic payments to ChatGPT. The company announced that it will use the agentic commerce protocol to expand payments and shopping features directly inside the AI chatbot.
This update will allow users to make in app payments on ChatGPT using linked bank accounts, Paypal balance, and cards. Users will also be able to use Instant Checkout for shopping within the chatbot. Paypal will provide its regular buyer and seller protections along with tracking and dispute support for purchases made through ChatGPT.
The company said that merchants using OpenAI Instant Checkout will also get Paypal payment processing support. It plans to connect its wide merchant network to ChatGPT which will enable small businesses and well known brands in sectors such as fashion, beauty, apparel, home improvement, and electronics to sell their products directly inside ChatGPT. Paypal will support delegated payments by managing payment processing for card transactions.
ChatGPT agentic payments and Instant Checkout
Instant Checkout was launched by OpenAI on 29 September. It lets users complete purchases directly from ChatGPT. Stripe helped build the open source version of the agentic commerce protocol so that developers and companies can create their own AI powered shopping services.
OpenAI added shopping search features in April 2025. Users can browse items, see reviews, and view product images. This update has helped ChatGPT move from being only a conversational tool to becoming a new commerce platform that competes with companies like Amazon and Google.
On 9 October, the National Payments Corporation of India and Razorpay became the first organisations to support agentic payments on ChatGPT. The service is based on UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay with Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank acting as banking partners. Tata group’s BigBasket is one of the first merchants to accept AI native agentic payments through ChatGPT.
