Rising online scams prompt Income Tax Department advisory for taxpayers

The Income Tax Department has issued a fresh public advisory urging taxpayers to stay alert as cases of fake emails and SMS scams continue to rise. The warning was shared through an official awareness message posted on X by the Government of India, asking people to verify every message that claims to come from tax authorities.

According to the Department, fraudsters are using fake sender IDs, deceptive links, and websites that closely resemble official pages to trick users. These scams are designed to steal sensitive information such as PAN details, passwords and one-time passwords. Taxpayers have been reminded that all tax related services should be accessed only through the official website https://www.incometax.gov.in

The Department has cautioned that any website resembling the official portal, including those using terms like e-filing or altered spellings, should be treated as suspicious. Emphasising safe online behaviour, the advisory states, “Think Twice, Act Wise,” and clearly notes that the Income Tax Department never asks for OTPs, passwords, or confidential personal information through email, SMS, or phone calls. Users are advised to always verify the sender email address and website domain before clicking on any link.

To improve reporting and response, citizens have been encouraged to flag suspicious messages. Phishing emails can be forwarded to [email protected], with a copy marked to [email protected]. For further support, taxpayers can contact the official helpdesk at 1800 103 0025 or 080 46122000. The awareness drive is part of a broader government effort to promote cyber hygiene and protect vulnerable groups, including senior citizens. Reinforcing the message, the Department said, “Think before you click–stay tax smart, stay safe.”
