Online fraud networks inflict massive daily losses on Bengaluru’s economy

Bengaluru is facing a sharp rise in cyber frauds that is steadily eroding its economy, with average losses estimated at nearly ₹4.83 crore every day. Officials say the scale of damage reflects how deeply daily life now depends on digital platforms and how quickly criminals are adapting their methods to exploit gaps in awareness and enforcement.

Police data shows cybercrime cases in the city have increased consistently over the past few years. What were once isolated incidents have grown into an organised and persistent threat. Common scams now include online investment fraud, fake banking calls, OTP and KYC related frauds, identity theft through social media and so called digital arrest schemes. Authorities say these methods are becoming more sophisticated and harder to detect.

Investigators note that fraudulent investment schemes account for the largest share of financial losses. Victims are drawn in with promises of high returns linked to stocks, cryptocurrency, foreign exchange trading and other digital products. Fraudsters often use polished websites, fake mobile apps and targeted social media ads to appear credible. “People assume they understand digital systems better than others,” an industry analyst said. “That confidence is often exploited by cybercriminals who appear equally knowledgeable and convincing.” Once money is transferred, it is usually moved through layered accounts before suspicions arise.

Fear based scams are also driving major losses. Criminals pose as bank officials, police officers, or government authorities and threaten victims with account freezes, legal action, or arrest. Many people act under pressure without verification. Police also warn of a gap between reported cases and actual losses, as many victims do not come forward. While enforcement agencies have strengthened cyber units and helplines, challenges remain due to cross border operations and fast changing tactics. Experts stress that awareness remains the strongest defence, urging people to verify urgent demands and report suspicious activity promptly.
