Oman acquires SalamAir, retains dual-airline strategy to boost efficiency and connectivity

In a strategic move to reshape its aviation sector, the Government of the Sultanate of Oman has completed the acquisition of SalamAir, aiming to enhance connectivity, operational efficiency, and long-term economic growth.

Despite the acquisition, both Oman Air and SalamAir will continue to operate as fully independent brands. Each airline will retain its identity, fleets, and services, ensuring continuity for passengers while improving coordination between the two carriers.

Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, Eng. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali, said the focus is on reducing overlap in destination networks to enable better route planning and more efficient aircraft utilisation.

He added that optimising fleet use and expanding air connectivity within Oman and across the region are key priorities. The strategy aims to strengthen the aviation ecosystem by aligning networks while preserving the distinct positioning of both airlines.

Al Maawali noted that the approach will enhance operational efficiency and offer travellers more options, along with greater diversity across the economic segments served by Oman Air and SalamAir.

Speaking to Oman News Agency, he said the move is also expected to improve the financial performance of both airlines by refining cost structures and enhancing revenue quality. Companies linked to ground services are also likely to benefit from the shift.

The acquisition reflects a broader effort to streamline Oman’s aviation sector by balancing efficiency, connectivity, and financial sustainability, while maintaining the independence of its national carriers.
