Ola Electric Receives Government Certification for Rare-Earth-Free Ferrite Motor

Ola Electric on Monday announced that it has become the first two-wheeler electric vehicle manufacturer to receive government certification for its in-house developed rare-earth-free ferrite motor.

The Bengaluru-based company said this milestone removes the dependence on imported rare-earth motors with permanent magnets, marking a significant breakthrough for India’s EV industry.

The certification was granted by the Global Automotive Research Centre in Tamil Nadu after Ola Electric’s ferrite motor successfully underwent rigorous performance verification and mandatory motor power tests in accordance with AIS 041, an Automotive Industry Standard notified by the Ministry of Road Transport, Government of India. AIS 041 is issued by the Automotive Research Association of India under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Tests confirmed that the company’s ferrite motor matches the performance of rare-earth permanent magnet motors in terms of net power for the 7 kW and 11 kW variants. Ola Electric said the ferrite motor delivers efficiency, performance, and durability comparable to rare-earth motors while significantly reducing costs and mitigating supply chain risks.

Ola Electric first unveiled its ferrite motor at its annual ‘Sankalp 2025’ event in August this year. With this certification, the company plans to integrate the ferrite motor across its entire product lineup, enhancing performance, affordability, and sustainability for millions of Indian consumers.
