Odisha Urges Banks to Step Up Fight Against Rising Cyber Fraud

The Odisha government has urged banking institutions to extend full support to State law enforcement agencies in addressing the growing problem of cyber fraud. The appeal was made during the 34th meeting of the State Level Coordination Committee (SLCC) held at the Reserve Bank of India in Bhubaneswar on Monday.

In the meeting, bankers were advised to cooperate closely with law enforcement agencies to effectively combat cyber-related crimes. Director General of Police Y B Khurania said that in Odisha the most frequently reported cyber frauds include investment and trading scams, digital arrest scams, fake job and work-from-home offers, fraudulent websites and hotel bookings, along with frauds linked to social media platforms. He called for urgent corrective measures by banks to regulate the opening of mule accounts, describing them as the backbone of cyber fraud operations.

Puspamitra Sahu, Chief General Manager of the Reserve Bank of India’s Central Office in Mumbai, also took part in the discussions. He outlined the RBI’s proactive approach in tackling cyber frauds and mule accounts by enhancing regulatory and supervisory measures, working with State agencies, and conducting awareness programmes to educate customers on safe banking practices and fraud prevention.

The meeting also addressed other issues, including the implementation of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, complaints against unincorporated bodies and cooperative societies, as well as market intelligence inputs.

Development Commissioner Anu Garg, who chaired the meeting, emphasised the importance of extensive awareness campaigns through online and offline platforms to educate citizens and protect them from Ponzi schemes and fraudulent activities.

Senior officials from the Odisha police, State government departments including Finance, Revenue and Disaster Management, Cooperation and Law, along with representatives from SEBI, participated in the meeting.
