Odisha reports rise in cyber fraud with losses over 200 crore

Odisha has recorded 3,486 cyber crime cases involving forgery worth two hundred and twenty two crore and nine lakh rupees in the last sixteen months. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi shared the figures in the Assembly on Monday. In his written reply, he said the State also reported sixty nine digital arrest cases during the same period.

According to the Chief Minister, a total of seven hundred and twenty seven people linked to cyber fraud cases were arrested. Charge sheets have been filed in one hundred and four cases. Out of the total money lost to cyber fraud, the police returned sixty one lakh and thirty six thousand rupees to victims. They also seized bank accounts with a combined value of six crore and seventy four lakh rupees. Majhi, who also manages the Home portfolio, provided these details in the House.

In a separate reply, Majhi said the government launched the Cyber Safety Campaign 2025 in October. The initiative covers the entire State. Thirty three police districts are taking part in the programme to improve public awareness on digital safety.

A fleet of sixteen Cyber Raths travelled across all districts as mobile awareness units. These vehicles helped spread information in both urban and rural regions. Majhi said that more than one hundred and twenty workshops on cyber safety and digital hygiene were organised for students, professionals and the wider public.

He added that more than twenty four lakh citizens have taken part in various awareness events under the campaign. These included inaugurations, walkathons, cyclothons, seminars, street plays, workshops, spot quizzes and public meetings. The campaign aims to help people understand digital risks and adopt safe online practices.
