The Odisha police will set up a dedicated vertical wing to strengthen its fight against cyber crimes across the state. This specialised unit will be headed by an Additional Director General (ADG) who will supervise and co-ordinate cyber crime investigations in Odisha.
The announcement comes soon after the government issued a notification regarding the creation of 20 new cyber police stations. With this addition, the state now has 34 cyber police stations, covering all 30 revenue districts.
“Just like the recent creation of the traffic and road safety wing that will be headed by an ADG-rank officer, we will soon have a vertical for cyber crime investigations in Odisha police. This will enhance the state’s capacity to address the growing complexities and sophistication of cyber offences,” said DGP Y B Khurania. He stressed that as cyber threats continue to evolve, the new vertical wing will play a crucial role in safeguarding digital infrastructure and protecting citizens from online crimes.
The move to create a specialised cyber crime command centre and monitoring unit has been prompted by the rising number of cyber offences, including online fraud, data breaches, and identity theft, which have become major challenges for law enforcement agencies.
In the last decade, Odisha has seen a sharp rise in cyber crime cases. Police data shows an increase of 1917 per cent, with cases jumping from only 124 in 2014 to 2,501 in 2024. The financial damage has also risen drastically. Fraud-related losses went up from Rs 8.97 crore in 2018 to Rs 154.5 crore in 2024, marking a 1,622 per cent increase.
“By centralising efforts and resources under a dedicated wing, we aim to streamline investigations, improve response times, and enhance the overall effectiveness of cyber crime management,” the DGP added.
The establishment of the unit is expected to involve the recruitment and training of personnel with skills in cyber forensics, digital investigation, and information technology. The wing is also likely to collaborate with national and international cyber crime agencies to keep pace with the latest trends and technologies in cyber security.
The DGP reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthen the capabilities of cyber crime investigators with modern tools and advanced technologies. He also noted that awareness would remain a key element in cyber crime prevention and highlighted that IT experts are already training police personnel in handling complex crime analysis.
