With lakhs of devotees gathering in Puri on Sunday to witness the grand ‘Suna Besha’ or golden attire of Lord Jagannath on the chariot, Odisha Police have deployed drones and AI-powered cameras to control the massive crowd and manage traffic efficiently. Authorities have urged people to plan their visit carefully and strictly follow the traffic advisory.
According to ADG (Traffic Police) Dayal Gangwar, the flow of vehicles from Bhubaneswar to Puri has been steadily increasing. To handle the situation, dynamic diversions are being carried out to reduce waiting time at Batgaon and Malatipatpur. “Present waiting time at Batgaon is around 20 to 30 minutes,” he said, requesting devotees to cooperate with the police and adhere to traffic guidelines.
Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said, “We are expecting a turnout of about 15 lakh people on the occasion of Suna Besha. Last night alone, about 2 lakh devotees had darshan of the deities on chariots. The administration is alert and aware of the situation and taking required measures to control the crowd.”
As per the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration schedule, devotees can witness the rituals from 6.30 pm to 11 pm on Sunday. Due to the heavy influx, all parking spaces in Puri were fully occupied by Saturday night. Vehicles are now being redirected to Talabania and Sterling based on availability.
Odisha DGP Y B Khurania is personally overseeing crowd management from the Integrated Crowd Control Centre. He urged devotees to maintain discipline and follow advisories. “Like Rath Yatra and Bahuda, police are using drones and AI-powered cameras to control crowds and regulate traffic. Adequate parking lots have been created in and around Puri,” he said.
Officials noted that there was a continuous stream of devotees arriving since Saturday night as the deities remained on chariots with no resting time. Morning rituals were completed on Sunday, and the sibling deities – Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath – were seated on their respective chariots parked before the Singha Dwar of the 12th-century temple.
Following a smooth Bahuda Yatra, police have strengthened security and crowd control after the June 29 stampede near the Shree Gundicha Temple, which led to three deaths. SJTA chief administrator Arabinda Padhee has urged everyone to cooperate with police for the peaceful conduct of the Suna Besha rituals.
