Seven members of an interstate cyber fraud ring were detained by the Odisha Police Crime Branch on Sunday after they defrauded a man out of Rs 1.4 crore, according to an official.
According to the officer, three of the seven accused individuals who were apprehended are from Tamil Nadu, while four are from Karnataka.
According to him, the defendants and their colleagues pretended to be trade analysts and tricked the complainant by promising significant profits on investments in shares, IPOs, and over-the-counter (OTC) trading.
The accused individuals defrauded the complainant of Rs 1.40 crore between November 13, 2024, and January 1, 2025, according to the criminal branch’s cybercrime team, which conducted the investigation, he added.
“After thoroughly analysing transaction details and examining digital evidence, we successfully cracked the case. The accused persons have been apprehended from various locations across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu,” the officer said.
The Odisha crime branch brought the suspects here on transit remand on Sunday after presenting them in local Karnataka and Tamil Nadu courts.
Mobile phones, SIM cards, screenshots of WhatsApp conversations, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, bank passbooks, checkbooks, and debit cards belonging to the accused have all been confiscated by the investigating team.
According to reports, officers from the Crime Branch have frozen Rs 15 lakh and retrieved Rs 4 lakh from the accused individuals’ bank accounts.
