Nxtra Data, the data center arm of Bharti Airtel, is planning a substantial investment of ₹4,500 to ₹6,000 crore over the next three to four years. This strategic move aims to establish Nxtra as a leader in India’s rapidly expanding data center market.
The company intends to significantly boost its capacity, nearly doubling it from the current 80-100 Mw by adding another 70-80 Mw. This aggressive expansion is partly driven by the growing demand from hyperscalers for large facilities to support artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
Nxtra currently operates 14 large data centers in key metropolitan areas and over 120 edge data centers across 65 cities. While both types of facilities are targeted for expansion, there will be a stronger focus on developing more large data centers. The company is actively seeking land in major data center hubs like Mumbai, which accounts for a significant portion of India’s total capacity.
This investment aligns with Nxtra’s broader commitment to sustainability. The company has already expanded its partnership with AMPIN Energy Transition, securing over 200 Mw of solar-wind hybrid energy. This initiative is a crucial step towards Nxtra’s goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2031 and becoming the first data center in India to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.
This substantial investment underscores the dynamic growth of India’s digital infrastructure and the increasing need for robust, sustainable data center solutions to power the nation’s digital transformation and the burgeoning AI landscape.
