Nvidia to build AI supercomputers for US Energy Department

Nvidia has announced that it will build seven new artificial intelligence powered supercomputers for the United States Department of Energy. The company also revealed that it has secured 500 billion dollars in bookings for its advanced AI chips. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared these updates during the company’s GTC event in Washington DC.

Nvidia is the first company to reach a valuation of more than 4 trillion dollars and continues to lead the rapid global adoption of AI technology. As it expands its presence internationally, it is also navigating the ongoing US China trade tensions which could influence global technology usage.

The new supercomputers will support the United States in maintaining and developing its nuclear weapons programme and will also be used for research in clean energy, including nuclear fusion. The largest system will be built in partnership with Oracle and will include 100,000 Nvidia Blackwell chips.

Huang praised government support for energy growth and said, “Putting the weight of the nation behind pro energy growth completely changed the game.” He added, “If this did not happen, we could have been in a bad situation, and I want to thank President Trump for that.”

Nvidia shares rose 3.3 percent to 197.82 dollars following the announcements.

Nvidia also shared new collaborations including a tie up with Nokia. The company will invest 1 billion dollars for a 2.9 percent stake in Nokia. Nvidia will work with Nokia to develop products designed for the AI communications market and improve the power efficiency of 6G base stations. Huang said, “We are going to take this new technology and we will be able to upgrade millions of base stations around the world.”

Nvidia confirmed that demand for its Blackwell and Rubin chips will continue to rise with strong bookings over the next five quarters.

The company also announced a partnership with Palantir Technologies to support commercial AI solutions. Nvidia will help accelerate logistics work for companies including a well known retailer. The partnership highlights growing opportunities outside Nvidia’s core data centre customers.

Nvidia revealed a new autonomous driving platform called Hyperion and has partnered with Uber to build a network of robotaxis. Huang said he expects the platform to be very successful.

Industry experts say these developments could help Nvidia move into new markets in the future.

Nvidia has also shared that it is manufacturing chips in Arizona and assembling servers and networking equipment in Texas and California. Huang said, “We are manufacturing in America again, it is incredible. The first thing that President Trump asked me is bring manufacturing back.”

The United States government continues to focus on AI expansion. This week, a competing chipmaker announced a one billion dollar partnership with the Department of Energy to build two new supercomputers for major scientific research.
