A potential refresh of Nvidia’s long-running Shield TV could soon bring modern video capabilities, including support for Samsung’s HDR10+ format.
Originally launched 10 years ago, the Shield TV remains one of the most powerful Android TV streaming boxes on the market. While it has seen minor updates over time, it still lacks support for certain newer technologies, including HDR10+.
In a recent interview with a technology publication, Nvidia’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, Andrew Bell, said the company is exploring new hardware for the Shield TV lineup. A future model would focus on supporting modern video codecs such as AV1 and expanding HDR compatibility. This could include additional Dolby Vision profiles as well as HDR10+ for local media playback.
Bell also revealed that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang had committed to providing effectively lifetime software support for the device. The company currently has no plans to discontinue updates for existing Shield TV models.
Even after a decade, the Shield TV continues to stand out in performance. It runs on Nvidia’s Tegra processor, which includes 4 high-performance Cortex-A57 CPU cores and a strong GPU. This hardware setup enables it to outperform most other Android TV streaming devices in its category.
If a new Shield TV is launched, it could become a strong companion for Samsung televisions, especially if it supports HDR10+ Advanced. This newer HDR format competes with Dolby Vision 2 and aims to deliver improved picture quality and dynamic metadata support.
For now, Nvidia has not confirmed a launch timeline. However, the company’s exploration of updated hardware signals that the Shield TV lineup may soon align with the latest video and streaming standards.
