Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang on Monday unveiled a new artificial intelligence platform called Alpamayo, designed to help autonomous vehicles think and act more like humans.
Speaking at a major global technology event in Las Vegas, Huang said the platform adds reasoning abilities to self driving cars. According to him, “Alpamayo brings reasoning to autonomous vehicles, allowing them to think through rare scenarios, drive safely in complex environments, and explain their driving decisions.”
Huang also announced that Nvidia has begun producing a driverless car in partnership with German automaker Mercedes Benz. The vehicle, the Mercedes Benz CLA, is powered by Nvidia technology and is set to launch in the United States in the coming months, followed by releases in Europe and Asia.
Wearing his signature black leather jacket, Huang said the project has helped Nvidia learn deeply about building advanced robotic systems and supporting partners in the physical AI space.
Industry analysts said the move strengthens Nvidia’s position as a leader in combining AI hardware and software. One analyst noted that Nvidia’s focus on large scale AI systems and platforms keeps it ahead of competitors and marks a shift from being mainly a computing company to becoming a platform provider for physical AI ecosystems.
Nvidia shares edged up slightly in after hours trading following the presentation.
During the event, Nvidia showed a video of an AI powered Mercedes Benz driving through San Francisco. A passenger sat behind the steering wheel with their hands resting in their lap. Huang explained, “It drives so naturally because it learned directly from human demonstrators,” adding that in every situation, “it tells you what it’s going to do, and it reasons about what it’s about to do.”
Alpamayo is being released as an open source AI model. The code is now available on a popular machine learning platform, allowing autonomous vehicle researchers to access it for free and retrain it.
“Our vision is that someday, every single car, every single truck, will be autonomous,” Huang told the audience.
Nvidia also revealed plans to launch a robotaxi service next year with an unnamed partner, though details about the location were not shared.
The company remains the world’s most valuable publicly traded firm, with a market value of over 4.5 trillion dollars. It also confirmed that its upcoming Rubin AI chips are currently in production and are expected later this year. These chips are designed to use less energy and lower the cost of developing AI systems.
