Nvidia Charts Alternate Route to Serve China Amid Stricter US AI Chip Curbs

In the evolving chessboard of global tech, Nvidia seems to be making a strategic move to stay in the Chinese market without violating tightened US export regulations. According to a recent report, the AI chip giant is quietly reworking its chip designs to bypass new restrictions, which aim to curb the flow of advanced semiconductor technology to China.

Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, during his mid-April visit to Beijing, met with key Chinese tech titans such as Alibaba, ByteDance and Tencent. During these private conversations, Huang reportedly shared that Nvidia is developing revised versions of its chips that would comply with the updated US mandates.

The newly tightened rules, introduced shortly before Huang’s visit, specifically blocked exports of Nvidia’s H20 chip. This chip had been engineered to satisfy earlier US compliance terms but still fell under the axe for offering too much computational power. American regulators say the crackdown is designed to prevent China’s military from acquiring and exploiting cutting-edge AI capabilities.

Nvidia has openly acknowledged the financial blow the new rules pose, estimating a $5.5 billion dent in revenue. Yet, the company remains committed to supporting its Chinese partners by exploring lawful and innovative pathways forward.

Insiders suggest that Nvidia is already preparing a fresh chip tailored to meet China’s needs without breaching regulatory lines. A test sample of this new silicon may be in customers’ hands by June. Alongside this, Nvidia is also crafting a variant of its latest Blackwell chip, engineered specifically for the Chinese landscape.

This careful dance between compliance and competition reflects Nvidia’s larger ambition — to remain a powerful presence in the world’s largest AI battleground, even as regulatory winds shift. For now, all eyes are on what emerges from Nvidia’s labs next.
