Nvidia and OpenAI have unveiled a landmark partnership worth $100 billion to power the next generation of artificial intelligence. The US-based chipmaker will invest heavily in the ChatGPT creator while also supplying it with advanced data centre chips, marking one of the largest alliances in the AI industry.
According to a report by a news agency, the deal includes two linked transactions. Nvidia will invest $10 billion in OpenAI for non-voting shares once a definitive agreement is reached. OpenAI will then use these funds to buy Nvidia’s high-performance chips, which are critical for building and scaling AI models.
The two companies have signed a letter of intent to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for OpenAI, with the final agreement expected soon. “Everything starts with compute. Compute infrastructure will be the basis for the economy of the future, and we will utilize what we’re building with Nvidia to both create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses with them at scale,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
For Nvidia, this partnership strengthens its position as the leading chip supplier for artificial intelligence while giving it a financial stake in one of its most important customers. For OpenAI, the deal ensures both funding and guaranteed access to cutting-edge computing power, a key advantage in the competitive AI race.
The first gigawatt of computing power from this collaboration is scheduled to be deployed in the second half of 2026 on Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin platform. Deliveries of the new hardware to OpenAI are expected to begin by late 2026.
Despite this major investment, OpenAI will continue developing its own custom chips as part of its long-term strategy. The company has already been working with Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. on chip design, a project that will move forward alongside its collaboration with Nvidia.
