India’s National Stock Exchange (NSE) is fighting a relentless digital battle, facing nearly 17 crore cyberattacks every single day. Officials confirmed that the exchange’s systems are constantly targeted, making it one of the most protected and resilient financial infrastructures in the country.
In a recent large-scale cyber simulation called Operation Sindoor, the NSE endured a record 40 crore attacks in just one day—yet its operations continued without disruption. The exchange’s cyber defence teams operate in “battle mode, 24/7, year-round,” according to officials, relying on advanced software, machine learning, and continuous human monitoring to fend off phishing attempts, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) assaults, and intrusion efforts.
The NSE runs two dedicated cyber defence centres that monitor threats in real time, backed by AI-powered anomaly detection and self-healing backup systems. These systems ensure that even under intense attack traffic, the exchange’s operations remain uninterrupted. During extreme situations like Operation Sindoor, foreign web access can be temporarily restricted to minimise risk exposure.
The exchange also enforces strict cybersecurity measures for its members, including mandatory cyber audits, Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Testing (VAPT), and a Cybersecurity Fundamentals Program through its academy.
Officials explained that if the Mumbai-based systems are ever compromised, the Chennai backup centre can instantly take over, ensuring “autonomous continuity” for India’s trading operations. This layered security framework is designed to protect not just the exchange, but the entire financial ecosystem connected to it.
Experts warn that financial institutions globally face rising cyber threats because of their high impact and relatively low execution cost. Even a short disruption could trigger cascading effects across payment networks, banking systems, and investor confidence.
As India’s digital markets expand rapidly, NSE’s resilience stands as both a reassurance and a stark reminder that the fight for cyber defence is constant and evolving.
