NPCI’s international arm links UPI with Malaysia’s DuitNow for cross-border payments

A new step toward seamless digital payments has been taken as cross-border QR-based transactions are set to go live between India and Malaysia through a fresh bilateral payments partnership.

NPCI International Payments Ltd announced that it has signed an agreement with Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd, also known as PayNet, to enable QR code-based merchant payments between the 2 countries.

The rollout will take place in a phase-wise manner. In the first phase, Indian travellers visiting Malaysia will be able to use their UPI apps to make cross-border merchant payments at DuitNow QR acceptance points. DuitNow QR is Malaysia’s national QR standard and is operated by PayNet.

In the next phase, Malaysian travellers visiting India will be able to scan UPI QR codes and make merchant payments using their DuitNow apps. This will allow visitors from both countries to make everyday payments easily using familiar digital platforms.

With this integration, Indian tourists will gain access to millions of DuitNow QR merchant locations across Malaysia. These include restaurants, retail outlets, tourist attractions, and other establishments. At the same time, Malaysian visitors to India will be able to make payments at millions of UPI QR-enabled merchant locations across the country.

The move strengthens the growing international footprint of UPI. UPI payments can now be made in countries including Malaysia, UAE, Nepal, Mauritius, Singapore, Nepal, France, and Bhutan.

The partnership is expected to simplify cross-border travel payments and enhance the digital payment experience for users in both India and Malaysia.
