Russ Thornton, who has served as interim advisory since March 2025, has been named the next chief technology officer (CTO) of Nottingham Building Society in the United Kingdom.
Paul Howley, who became the 176-year-old mutual’s first chief technology and transformation officer in 2022, is Thornton’s successor. The building society launched a number of technological projects during Howley’s three-year term, including as collaborations with Nova Credit for the cross-border credit solution Credit Passport and MQube for the Origo mortgage origination platform.
Thornton oversaw a digital transformation at Shawbrook Bank before joining Nottingham Building Society. There, he deployed nCino’s cloud-based banking platform to automate loan origination and portfolio management procedures, integrated Pegasystems for automated underwriting, and put Cashflows in place for business finance payments. Additionally, he has held the position of CTO at Cofunds, McKinney Rogers, and WorldRemit.
With the appointment of Aaron Shinwell, a former executive from Santander UK, as chief loan officer, beginning August 2025, the building society has further bolstered its C-Suite staff in addition to hiring a new CTO.
